Colorado Beach to Host Surfing Championship

After carefully considering three different venues to hold the ISA World Masters Surfing Championship, ISA officials have chosen Nicaragua’s Colorado Beach for the event which will take place on July 14-22, 2012. President of the ISA (International Surfing Organization) Fernando Aguerre noted that taking into account all the variables that influence the quality of the waves, Colorado Beach at Hacienda Iguana proved to be the best option for the championship.

Featuring former world champions and well-known pros, there is every reason to expect superb surfing action throughout the event. Among the competitors will be eight-time world champion Layne Beachley from Australia; five-time world champion Tom Curren from the USA; four-time world champion Juan Ashton from Puerto Rico, and two-time world champion Heather Clark from South Africa. Other renowned surfers competing include Ross Williams from Hawaii and Fabio Gouveia of Brazil.

With offshore winds prevailing more than 300 days of the year, Colorado Beach has long been a favorite venue for surfers, as it offers consistent surf with both left and right breaks, warm water, a mild climate and pristine beaches. The jungle-like tropical forest adds to the laid-back atmosphere, while the locals are enthusiastic about the sport of surfing and welcome fellow-surfers. The tourism infrastructure is well developed, offering a variety of accommodation options – all in all, the perfect venue for the 2012 ISA World Masters Surfing Championship.

The bid to host the event was supported by the Nicaraguan government, with the Minister of Tourism, Mario Salinas, noting that the people of Nicaragua are very proud to have won the bid to host the 2012 ISA World Masters Surfing Championship. With tourism being one of Nicaragua’s most viable economic sectors for growth and employment, Salinas expressed his hope that the event will showcase the natural beauty of the country, while giving its people the opportunity to demonstrate their warm hospitality. It certainly presents surfing enthusiasts with the perfect opportunity to combine their favorite activity with a vacation in one of the most beautiful and exotic destinations imaginable.
