The tiny department of Granada covers a nine hundred and twenty nine square kilometer area, and has an estimated population of a hundred and ninety thousand. It is also home to one of the oldest cities in North America, which is its capital city and shares the name of the department, namely Granada. The other three municipalities are Nandaime, Diria and Diriomo. Granada might be a small department but it has a big heart and overflows with sites and attractions for visitors to discover.
In and around the city of Granada, visitors can look forward to attractions such as hiking and mountain biking, and noteworthy sites such as The Alhambra complex that includes a castle, historic tours and gardens, Mirador de San Nicolas, Albaicin and Carmen de los Martires, to name a few. Nandaime offers picturesque beaches such as Playa Maderas and spectacular views of the nearby Mombacho Volcano. Due to the Granada department being blanketed in breathtaking landscapes, the region is extremely popular with hiking explorers, who come to the department to travel along the small paths that take them through some of the most breathtaking parts of Nicaragua. Be sure to visit fascinating towns such as Pueblos Brujos (Bewitched Villages) and Pueblos Blancos (White Villages), which form part of the numerous noteworthy sites within the Granada department.
