Ometepe Biological Field School

There are two field schools that are run under the supervision of the Maderas Rainforest Conservancy, one of which is the Ometepe Biological Field School. It is situated on the picturesque Ometepe Island and offers students a wide variety of courses and specialized fields to study. Some of the courses run in conjunction with conservation projects hosted by the Maderas Rainforest Conservancy, and the courses include botany, primatology and ecology. The opportunities offered to the public, in regard to conservation, include workshops for children, anti-deforestation projects, veterinary field projects and educational initiatives to raise conservation awareness.

The island of Ometepe covers an area of two hundred and seventy-six square kilometers and is located in the beautiful Lake Nicaragua. It is one of the biggest freshwater islands in the world, and has two very prominent volcanoes of which Conception stands at a height of 1 700 meters and Maderas at 1 400 meters. The island is inhabited, and has approximately thirty thousand residents.

Looking at the various courses the Ometepe Biological Field School has to offer, the primate field school specializes in primates and has different divisions, such as Primate Communication, Primate Behavior and Ecology, Primate Conservation and Advanced Primate Behavior and Ecology. The mantled black howler monkeys and white faced capuchin monkeys are the two main species on the island. Students don’t only attend lectures but are challenged with research projects that give them experience in the wild, as well as in the classroom.

Studying the environment is also a very important part of conservation, as preserving habitats promotes the survival of bird and animal species. The elfin forests are a part of the cloud forests and are endangered habitats. Courses look at the biodiversity of the habitats and the animal life they support, as well as the impact human intervention has on the environment. Students can also enroll in the Botany Field School, or even take courses in Tropical Herpetology, Comparative Anatomy and Function and even learn how to become successful and creative wildlife photographers. Ometepe Biological Field School offers a diverse range of courses, allowing students to broaden their horizons and combine study material with practical work, giving them much needed knowledge for field work.
