Enjoy the Tranquil Beauty of the Solentiname Islands

Located at the southern end of Lake Nicaragua, in the department of Río San Juan, the archipelago of Solentiname consists of thirty-six islands, the four largest of which are inhabited – Mancarrón, Mancarroncito, La Venada and San Fernando. These spectacular tropical islands which are volcanic in origin, are listed as one of Nicaragua's protected areas and are a National Monument of Nicaragua. The Soletiname Islands are very remote and can only be reached by boat. Modern amenities such as running water and electricity are not part of everyday life for most of the inhabitants of the island, which adds to its appeal as a tranquil haven that has inspired countless artists over the years.

Bajadero de Guadalupe and Los Almendros Viewpoints

When traveling along the Managua-Masaya highway, around 26 kilometers out of Managua in the rural region of Nindirí, is the settlement of El Hoyo – the starting point of the flights of stairs leading down to the viewing platform of Bajadero de Guadalupe. Although the viewpoint it rather off the beaten track, it is nonetheless popular with both locals and visitors to the exotic country of Nicaragua as it offers a breathtaking view of the Masaya Lagoon, the Masaya Volcano and Piedras Quemadas Park. The path and steps are well maintained and easy to walk, and the stone and concrete viewpoint point has a concrete balustrade around it for safety.

Apoyo Lagoon Natural Reserve

The Apoyo Lagoon lies in a crater near the center of a long volcanic chain running from north to south in Nicaragua, between the departments of Granada and Masaya. Declared as a nature reserve in 1991, the Apoyo Lagoon Natural Reserve is one of the 78 protected areas of Nicaragua and is managed by the Ministry of the Environment and natural Resources (MARENA). The lush green slopes of the crater and the fresh clean water of the lagoon, along with a wide variety of flora and fauna, make the reserve a popular leisure destination for tourists and locals.

Take a Flight to San Juan del Norte

Officially renamed San Juan de Nicaragua in 2002, the municipality formerly known as San Juan del Norte has recently opened a new airport on the outskirts of its main town, known alternatively as Greytown or San Juan del Norte. Named Greytown Airport, the new facility will make travel between Managua and this fairly remote destination on the southern Caribbean coast of Nicaragua. Local airline La Costeña has already added the new airport to its schedule with flights from Managua twice a week. The airport’s 1,200 meter runway is suitable for small planes with a capacity of 19 passengers, but plans are underway to lengthen the runway to accommodate 46-passenger airplanes.

Visit the Village of Balgue

Balgue is located on the Island of Ometepe near the city of Maderas. This small village is situated on the bus route, and is the last stop from Altagracia, with the roads leading out further from Balgue being very rocky and difficult to navigate. There are, however, other smaller villages further on, and Balgue and these villages are surrounded by breathtaking forests and natural wonders. Balgue might be small in comparison to other destinations on the island and does not feature many luxuries, but visiting the village is recommended as it does have numerous attractions and activities to offer.
