Nicaragua’s Isla de Ometepe: Island of two hills
The word Ometepe is derived from the Aztec language meaning two mounts and the name could not be more befitting for this island in Lake Nicaragua. This island was formed when two volcanoes, Concepcion and Maderas, rose from the waters of the lake and are now connected by a small isthmus that gives the island an hourglass shaped when view from high above.
For the traveler looking for some exciting times without the hassles of resort living, Ometepe is the place to live the adventure dream. Like true island life, this land enjoys a laid back and friendly atmosphere that offers a varied activity list. Take a hike through the forest and you will be greeted by the many wild animals that inhabit the trees. Monkeys, armadillos, bats and over 80 species of migratory birds can be seen on any given day. However, the main attractions are the two volcanoes that created this enchanted island. Hiking is available to the top and once conquered you can peek over the rim to see a truly magnificent site. Access is easy and can be reached from Managua or Granada by bus or boat. The people are friendly and welcoming. The dry season starts in December and ends in May.
