Entry from: neighbourhood of Granada, Nicaragua Entry Title: "Excursions to Masaya, Catarina and Laguna de Apoyo" Entry: "nederlandse tekst: zie lager para leer el texto español: desplácese hacia abajo english Today we are making a daytrip from Granada to the Masaya volcano, and to Laguna de Apoyo, a beautiful blue lagoon in an extinct crater near the village of Catarina. Visiting Masaya volcano was quite a special experience, because one of it's craters -the active Santiago crater- is continually emitting large amounts of sulfur dioxide gas! And surprisingly, a colony of green parakeets is living inside the crater, apparently unaffected by the toxic gases. It is also the only volcano in the western hemisphere where you are able to drive to the rim! In 1979, Masaya became Nicaragua's first National Park, named Masaya Volcano National Park (Parque Nacional Volcan Masaya). The National Park has an area of 54km2 and includes in total two volcanoes, the Masaya Volcano and the Nindirí Volcano, and five craters. The Masaya Volcano National Park, located 23 kilometres south of Managua, is very accessible. Within the park there is a 5 km paved road that leads to the crater. This enables visitors to drive by car up to Santiago crater. The Santiago crater was formed in 1852 and is the most active crater of the park and one of the most active volcanoes of the Americas. It maintains a constant pool of lava in its crater. When visiting the volcano, you can smell and see the sulfur dioxide gas coming out of the crater ! Laguna de Apoyo is a volcano crater lake that can be seen from Mirador de Catarina. Only a half hour drive from Granada you reach Catarina, an attractive hillside village, known for its nurseries of wonderful flowering plants and for local crafts. Catarina climbs the extinct cone of the Apoyo volcano from the road until its highest point overlooking the majestic blue crater lake of Laguna de Apoyo. When the old Apoyo Volcano erupted, about 23,000 years ago, it left a huge 7 km-wide crater that gradually filled with water. This spectacular lagoon can be easily reached by car, and it is a great spot for swimming and relaxing. Although several guesthouses have opened on the lake, the lake still remains relatively undeveloped. And thanks to restrictions on motorized watercraft, the water is clean, clear and dark blue. From the loukout or Mirador de Catarina (entrance fee must be payed) you can also see the Mombacho volcano and even Cocibolca lake. Catarina is known as the the 'flower'village. Nicaraguans come here from around the country to buy their houseplants. nederlands Weer vroeg wakker, 04 u plaatselijke tijd.
