Montecristo River Lodge – A Haven of Tranquility
Located around 43 kilometers downstream from San Carlos on the Rio San Juan, Nicaragua, the eco-friendly Montecristo River Lodge offers visitors a superb getaway in naturally beautiful surroundings. The lodge is situated within the Montecristo Private Reserve, an important birding area which is home to the mystic Macua, after which Nicaragua’s national drink is named. The terrain is primary rain forest with a wealth of exotic vegetation and wild orchids, as well as being home to ocelots and a variety of monkeys, amphibians and reptiles.
The beautiful Rio San Juan forms a natural border between Nicaragua and Costa Rica and the Montecristo River Lodge originally started out as a base for sport fishing on the river. Since 1999, however, the lodge has been successfully focusing on eco-tourism and applying practices for sustainable development, conservation and reforestation, supported by the Rain Forest Alliance – an international non-profit organization working to conserve biodiversity and promote sustainable livelihoods in many locations around the world.
Visitors can enjoy many activities both on the river and on land along the river when they visit Montecristo River Lodge. Sport fishing is still a very popular activity and fishing adventures on the river can be arranged. Additionally, visitors can enjoy jungle river adventures, birding expeditions, horseback riding and hiking, as well as an informative tour of the organic plantation, covering the principles of ecotourism. Keen bird-watchers never fail to be astounded at the diversity of birdlife found in the rain forest. Tours of local shrimp and fish farms can also be arranged.
Montecristo River Lodge is the proud holder of Green Awards, Certifications and Memberships. The cabins all have a stunning river view, television, fridge, kitchenette and private bathrooms, while the restaurant and bar serve up delicious traditional food and refreshments, all in a scenic setting which makes the modern world seem a lifetime away. But that doesn’t mean that guests will have to rough it, as the lodge has built a reputation for being clean and comfortable, with the hospitable staff going out of their way to ensure that a stay at the Montecristo River Lodge is an experience worth repeating.
