1979 Managua, Nicaragua for ABC.wmv [00:28]
1979, Documentary film by Detroit Annie in Managua, Nicaragua, around Xmas - I was commuting between Brussels and Paris, had a enough (from doing the Tambacounda documentary) for a ticket to see Jesse in Costa Rica for Xmas, and had inside info about the Nicaraguan revolution about to happen, so arranged with ABC news (whom I'd worked with before in Ny) to cover it freelance while I was on that side of the globe. Arrived ok, ABC called and wanted me to go to Managua right away to film a demonstration - I said look, I'm not rich, can't go twice, and have inside info that the real revolution will be in ten days, not now - they insisted, promised to reimburse planefare, have a hotel room waiting and a local chauffeur, all the film I'd need, by courrier plane, no problem - so I went. Immediately, Somoza shut down the phones, airports and roads, no way out. At the hotel they'd received no instructions about me, the previous stringer was leaving and wouldn't even let me use the shower! A woman who worked at the airport and remembered me, let me stay at her very modest home, (dangerous section of town) called an uncle who happened to be pals with the revolutionary leader Eden Pastora, to arrange an interview, and took me to the demonstration - which looked like any other demonstration - but I filmed it and put the rolls on the courrier plane expecting blank rolls to keep shooting - they didn't come. Next day the central telephone standard was opened and I called ABC (collect ...

The Roberto Clemente Team in NIcaragua: Volunteer Abroad Nicaragua [07:03]
The Roberto Clemente Health Clinic serves as a positive agent for change by saving lives, improving health, and fulfilling the promise of medicine for those most in need. We are located in a very remote area in Tola, Nicaragua and see approximately 9000 patients per year, and your contributions are vital to the continued success of our efforts. While it may be hard to imagine the impact your financial contribution may have to such a distant community, every donation helps. Whether it's $5, $50, $500 or $5000, please use this form to make your donation. Donating only takes a minute, but will have a long-lasting effect on the people of Nicaragua. You can also volunteer abroad with us and enjoy a nice vacation and do some social work in our clinic. Volunteer in Nicaragua is very easy and while medical volunteers and public health volunteers are very much in demand, you do not necessarily need to be in the healthcare sector. There are numerous volunteer opportunities abroad for social workers, students, teachers, lawyers, healthcare social workers, etc. If you are looking for an international volunteer experience and wish to make a positive contribution to humanity, there is no better place to gain volunteer experience than at the Roberto Clemente Health Clinic. We constantly welcome volunteers who come to practice what they've learned in medical schools, doctors and specialists who come to treat patients with special illnesses and many more people who are not medically ...

Local Nicaraguan Screaming at Bus Driver! [01:37]
While in Nicaragua and on my way into town the tire on the van that I was riding in exploded and we had to pull over to change it. Luckily we didn't crash as there were over 25 people sardine in this 8 person van! One of the passengers was so upset that he had to wait for the tire to be changed and wanted a discount on the price. Although many won't be able to understand the words, just watch his energy and actions and you'll get a good laugh I promise!

Managua is the capital city of Nicaragua as well as the department and municipality by the same name. It is located on the southwestern shore of Lake Managua. The city was declared the national capital in 1852. Previously, the capital had alternated between the cities of León and Granada. The city has a population of about 1680100 composed predominantly of Spanish-speaking creoles and mestizos. Founded in 1819 and given the name of Leal Villa de Santiago de Managua, the city began life as a rural fishing village. Efforts to make Managua the capital of Nicaragua began in 1824, soon after the Central American nations became independent from Spain. Managua's location between the rival cities of León and Granada made it an ideal compromise site. The city has been witness to the rise and fall of political powers throughout Nicaragua's history, and has suffered two devastating earthquakes over the course of the 20th century. Managua est la capitale du Nicaragua et du département du même nom, situé près de l'océan Pacifique. Le nom de Managua vient de Mana-ahuac, qui signifie ...
