Liberia Costa Rica To Nicaragua Border (Penas Blancas) [02:39]
After waking up early in Liberia Costa Rica we walked to the bus station and caught the first bus to the Costa Rica-Nicaragua border. It cost a few dollars per person which isn't bad but the bus was packed. The public bus does stop along the way to drop off and pick up passengers so it can take a little longer than taking private transportation. I prefer taking public transportation as I enjoy the interaction with the local people and is well worth the extra time. The long line of trucks is for inspections that I hear can take around 18 hours to get through the border. Our bus driver ended up going around the line but a few times during this section we ended up playing chicken with the oncoming traffic. If you have any questions regarding the getting to the Nicaragua border feel free to contact me.
Penas Blancas Border Crossing Costa Rica To Nicaragua [00:17]
This is the line to get your passports stamped. Depending on the time of day and when you are leaving or entering the country, it can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 6 hours. This line was approximatly 5 1/2 hours. There are other options if you want to take some risks. One of those options is to pay a local to get your passport stamped for you. The only issue I would have with this is that you are giving your passport to a random person. Feel free to contact me with any questions on how to cross the boarder into Nicaragua. It can get pretty confusing!!
Semana Santa at the Nicaragua-Costa Rica Border [00:59]
Semana Santa (Holy Week) is a great time for holiday in Central America. Unfortunately there are several thousand people who think the same thing. The Nicaragua-Costa Rica border at Penas Blancas is incredibly hot, sweaty and packed with people. Of all the border crossings I've done, this was the longest...around 4 hours total to cross.
