Clashes break out at Nicaragua taxi strike [01:03]
Clashes break out at Nicaragua taxi strike (ROUGH CUT ONLY - NO REPORTER NARRATION) Violent scenes in Nicaragua on Monday (October 01) after riot police faced off with striking taxi drivers in the capital to demand greater government fuel subsidies. Setting tyres on fire and blockading thoroughfares in Managua, riot police were called in to forcibly disperse the large crowd of protesting taxi drivers. Rounding up protesters and pulling drivers out of their taxis, scuffles erupted as the authorities attempted to arrest demonstrators. According to local media, taxi drivers resisted riot police with some protesters throwing stones at the officers. Nicaragua's "La Prensa" newspaper reported that at least one taxi driver was injured with five protesters taken into custody by police. Taxi drivers had taken to the streets of the capital to call on the government to provide greater fuel subsidies and ban cheap motor taxis from operating. Earlier in the day, another group of taxi drivers with the same demands - but who chose not to participate in the protests - met with members of Managua's city government to begin negotiations.
