This is a good town to have as a base camp to explore the Island. You can travel to a nice beach in Santo Domingo by a 35 minutes bus ride or explore the 2 volcanoes on the island from here. Not many people are in a rush in Altagracia and dont be surprised to find the 2 person lines in the local stores really slow. The store employees usually have better things to do than wait on you to purchase items. You can get a nice hotel here for fewer than 8 dollars and eat a nice meal in a restaurant for under 5 dollars.

Playa Santo Domingo, Nicaragua (Isla De Ometepe) If you are staying in Altagracia then this is a good option for swimming in the lake. The bus ride is 10 Cordoba to Santo Domingo from Altagracia and takes about 30 to 40 minutes depending on what the bus is hauling. The roads are pretty bad heading to Santo Domingo and that slows the trip down. They are putting in a new road and lots of construction. The beach is very clean and you can wade out into the lake and have a nice swim. There are some restaurants and stores to grab some snacks.
