Managua era una de las ciudades mas hermosas de Nicaragua. Su arquitectura inglesa con influencia francesa en sus edificios era envidiable. La ciudad antes del terremoto tenía un centro bien identificado. Hoy es imposible saber cuál es el centro de Managua pues la ciudad se ha extendido al sur ya otras regiones habiendo hoy tres centros y un sin número de rotondas.

Leal Villa de Santiago de Managua, nombre con el que fue fundada, o simplemente Managua, es la actual capital de Nicaragua, ubicada en Centroamérica entre Costa Rica y Honduras. Cuenta con unos 1817096 habitantes (2004)en su área metropolitana, lo cual hace que sea considerada como la cuarta ciudad más poblada de América Central, después de Ciudad de Guatemala, San Salvador y San José de Costa Rica. Managua is the capital city of Nicaragua as well as the department and municipality by the same name. It is located on the southwestern shore of Lake Managua. The city was declared the national capital in 1852.[2] Previously, the capital had alternated between the cities of León and Granada. The city has a population of about 1680100 composed predominantly of Spanish-speaking creoles and mestizos. Founded in 1819 and given the name of Leal Villa de Santiago de Managua, the city began life as a rural fishing village.[3] Efforts to make Managua the capital of Nicaragua began in 1824, soon after the Central American nations became independent from Spain. Managua's location between the rival cities of León and Granada made it an ideal compromise site. The city has been witness to the rise and fall of political powers throughout Nicaragua's history, and has suffered two devastating earthquakes over the course of the 20th century.
