Laguna De Apoyo is what remains today of a massive volcanic explosion more than 20000 years ago. It lies in the long chain of volcanic mountains that span Nicaragua. It is nestled between Volcano Mombacho to the South and Volcano Masaya to the North. Over time the massive crater filled with both rain and subterranean water. Thermal vents keep the Laguna at a comfortable temperature year round. The surrounding cliffs are lush with vegetation and plummet dramatically to the shore line. The Laguna is 200 meters deep which makes it the lowest place in Central America.... that's funny I didn't feel down at all.
