Formation, Learning, and Service: University of Portland Students' Exploration of Nicaragua [34:33]
What happens when eighteen students and three faculty and staff members travel to Nicaragua for three weeks to learn about the political, economical, and social situations of the country? University of Portland's Collaborative for International Studies & Global Outreach (CISGO) attempts to answer that question with Formation, Learning, and Service: University of Portland Students' Exploration of Nicaragua, a digital storytelling project by communication studies professor Courtney Vail Fletcher and videographer/photographer Jeff D. Kennel. Every spring, several University of Portland students, faculty, and staff members take part in the Nicaragua Immersion program through the Moreau Center for Service and Leadership. The program allows students to engage in service learning, focusing on the culture and current social justice issues facing the country. A participant in the 2011 Nicaragua Immersion, Fletcher decided to film the trip for a documentary. "We wanted to come back and share the stories and experiences we had with a wider range of audiences," Fletcher said. "We are only 21 people who got to have the experience, but we can share it with so many through the documentary." Videographer/photographer Jeff Kennel, who works in the Office of Marketing and Communications, also travelled with the group and documented it with film and photos. "We want to touch upon what the students did during the trip and how it will form and change them," Kennel said. "They learned about ...

1979 Managua, Nicaragua for ABC.wmv [00:28]
1979, Documentary film by Detroit Annie in Managua, Nicaragua, around Xmas - I was commuting between Brussels and Paris, had a enough (from doing the Tambacounda documentary) for a ticket to see Jesse in Costa Rica for Xmas, and had inside info about the Nicaraguan revolution about to happen, so arranged with ABC news (whom I'd worked with before in Ny) to cover it freelance while I was on that side of the globe. Arrived ok, ABC called and wanted me to go to Managua right away to film a demonstration - I said look, I'm not rich, can't go twice, and have inside info that the real revolution will be in ten days, not now - they insisted, promised to reimburse planefare, have a hotel room waiting and a local chauffeur, all the film I'd need, by courrier plane, no problem - so I went. Immediately, Somoza shut down the phones, airports and roads, no way out. At the hotel they'd received no instructions about me, the previous stringer was leaving and wouldn't even let me use the shower! A woman who worked at the airport and remembered me, let me stay at her very modest home, (dangerous section of town) called an uncle who happened to be pals with the revolutionary leader Eden Pastora, to arrange an interview, and took me to the demonstration - which looked like any other demonstration - but I filmed it and put the rolls on the courrier plane expecting blank rolls to keep shooting - they didn't come. Next day the central telephone standard was opened and I called ABC (collect ...

The sailing dories (cayuko in Spanish) are carved out of a single tree, shaped with hatches, chisels and sandpaper and painted for race day. There are three categories, A, B and C corresponding to the big dories, medium length and small boats. The leave from the wharf and round a buoy about two miles away, receive a flag, then the first one back to the wharf is the winner.
