The Interior of Old Cathedral of Managua, Nicaragua [01:38]
The Old Cathedral of Managua, Nicaragua (Catedral de Santiago) designed by architect Pablo Dambach, was built in 1920. Dambach was an architect from Belgian living in Managua at the time. He took his inspiration from the Saint-Sulpice church in Paris and created this wonderful cathedral. In 1931, the cathedral survived an earthquake, but the devastating Managua earthquake of 1972, which killed thousands of people, made the structure unsafe. Because of the weakness of the architectural structure (which is held up by a system of steel beams), people are not allowed inside the Old Cathedral of Managua. In spite of this, earlier this year, I had the opportunity to go inside to take photographs. I won't say how I got inside, that's another story. The building with its crumbling altars and columns is utterly beautiful and magnificent with its lovely muted colors, the faded frescoes, the daylight streaming through its hollow windows. It is both holy and like the ghost of a beautiful woman at the same time. It was magical to be inside the structure but for a brief moment I thought, if the earth below Managua trembled, this fragile beauty would collapse upon me. This movie of the interior of the Old Cathedral of Managua is made up of the series of photographs I took. I found some haunting lovely music like a choir of angels which expressed the magic of the experience. A talented person I hired, put them together in the form of a movie. Nicaragua es uno de los paises centroamericanos con mas costumbres y tradiciones de la región. Esta imagen se llama Inmaculada Concepción de María la cual baja del altar mayor de la catedral de Granada cada 28 de Noviembre de cada año. En humilde opinión, esta es la imagen mas bella de todas las imágenes que se bajan el 28 de Noviembre en Nicaragua, en la conocida celebración nicaraguense denominada La Gritería.
