In the US Army there is a "Culture of Cowardice." It feels like everyone has been trained to cover their asses and lay low for 20 years so they can get out and collect their pension. This really bothered my while I was in Nicaragua, because I was young and wanted to just get things done. So when I would get in trouble for working hard in the name of safety, and no one would care when I went and sat down for the rest of the day it didn't make any sense to me. Especially when I knew that I could raise my hand at any moment and volunteer to walk around the roads of Iraq with a shovel looking for IED's. Don't tell me you care about my safety when you would send me to die without a second thought out in the desert. The day after I was kicked out of the fork lift I was sitting in the motorpool office waiting for them to print me off a slip of paper which would become my license. Even though I was never tested on the machine, I would have a slip of paper saying I could drive it. While I was waiting a soldier came in and said there was an 18 wheeler blocking the road outside. He wanted to know if anybody could move it. I raised my hand and said I could do it. I had never driven an 18 wheeler before. He asked if I had a license, and I told him, "No, but if you need it moved I can do it." 1979, Documentary film by Detroit Annie in Managua, Nicaragua, around Xmas - I was commuting between Brussels and Paris, had a enough (from doing the Tambacounda documentary) for a ticket to see Jesse in Costa Rica for Xmas, and had inside info about the Nicaraguan revolution about to happen, so arranged with ABC news (whom I'd worked with before in Ny) to cover it freelance while I was on that side of the globe. Arrived ok, ABC called and wanted me to go to Managua right away to film a demonstration - I said look, I'm not rich, can't go twice, and have inside info that the real revolution will be in ten days, not now - they insisted, promised to reimburse planefare, have a hotel room waiting and a local chauffeur, all the film I'd need, by courrier plane, no problem - so I went. Immediately, Somoza shut down the phones, airports and roads, no way out. At the hotel they'd received no instructions about me, the previous stringer was leaving and wouldn't even let me use the shower! A woman who worked at the airport and remembered me, let me stay at her very modest home, (dangerous section of town) called an uncle who happened to be pals with the revolutionary leader Eden Pastora, to arrange an interview, and took me to the demonstration - which looked like any other demonstration - but I filmed it and put the rolls on the courrier plane expecting blank rolls to keep shooting - they didn't come. Alone, Unguided, with just basic supplies I headed out from Granada, Nicaragua. the start of another great motorcycle adventure. in six days I covered 1400 KLs over mountains, jungles, deserts and saw two oceans. the road was dangerous, mean, nasty, and unforgiving. i put this video together to show what its like to explore central america on a motorcycle. plus lots of groovie music to go along.
