Leo and Dorothea in Nicaragua

Seshday friends Leo, Dorothea and their dog Hookena are on a road trip from San Diego, California to Rio de Janeiro, Brasil exploring every surf spot along the way. Here are some images of Nicaragua. After the grueling Honduras boarder crossings the night began to consume the sky and we needed to find a place to rest. For miles there seemed to be nothing around so when the "auto hotel" popped out of nowhere we took the chance. Now auto hotels aren't regular hotels, you know, the kind that you check in at the front desk and have your coffee in the morning. No this is a fast rotating, secretive hotel so people can privately have a room "get things done" then bail early in the morning. We've seen literally 100s of these and have laughed flying by them from the road but tonight we succumbed out of pure exhaustion. And this is how our Nicaragua experience comically unraveled. Popoyo Playa found us the next day, a lonely beach of nothing but wind and sand. There was no escape, the sun pierced through our every layer of protection and boiled our blood. Playa Popoyo is known for its great surf along with its off shore wind. This wind is strong enough to pick you up like a kite, almost. Popoyo is sandwiched between the largest lake of central america, Lago de Nicaragua and the Pacific Ocean and this is what generates the powerful wind 360 days out of the year.
