Nicaragua se autodefine como un Estado independiente, libre, soberano, unitario e indivisible. Suele ser asimismo considerada una República democrática, participativa y representativa, manteniendo cuatro grandes poderes (el Legislativo, el Ejecutivo, el Judicial y el Electoral) como órganos de gobierno. El pueblo nicaragüense es de naturaleza multiétnica y parte integrante de la nación centroamericana. El país se ubica entre el océano Pacífico al oeste y el mar Caribe por el este.
