Jinotega in Nicaragua, Travel Destinations

Jinotega is situated in the north central mountains of Nicaragua. The city itself is situated in a valley. The valley is picturesque, surrounded by high pine-tree covered mountains and rain forests. The department of Jinotega is somewhat large – it is actually the second largest in Nicaragua. Of the nearly 180 000 inhabitants, the majority live in urban zones. However, quite a large number dot rural areas.

For the most part, Jinotega can be reached by Express buses that depart from Managua. You can also reach Matagalpa, Esteli and Managua from Jinotega on the same mode of transport – something to keep in mind when planning your trip details. Jinotega has a good municipal market that trades daily between 8 am and 5 pm. You will be able to find fresh food, clothing and just about anything else you might need at this market.

If you are looking for a place to dine in Jinotega, there is a family owned chain of restaurants that goes by the name of ‘El Tico’. The restaurants range from cheap to expensive, depending on which restaurant you go to. There is also a great restaurant by the name of La Colmena which is relatively inexpensive. All the restaurants mentioned here use purified water to ensure healthy eating.

There are also quite a few hotels and resorts available in the area. The Selva Negra, not far from Jinotega, offers a variety of activities such as horseback riding, hiking, bird watching, and sightseeing. The main local hotels are La Solentuna Hem, and La Colmena and El Tico, which both double as a hotel and a restaurant. The Calle Ocho area is notoriously unsafe and it is recommended that visitors stay away from here after dark. Whatever the case, Jinotega is the perfect place to go for a quiet holiday away from the hustle and bustle of normal holiday life.
