Driving in Nicaragua
Hello all!
We are planning a two week vacation to Nicaragua over Christmas/New Years. Originally we thought we would rent a car however I'm a little concerned after reading the Travel Report Issued by the Government of Canada.
"Any driver who is a party to an accident where injuries have been sustained will be taken into custody, regardless of who is at fault. The detention lasts until a judicial decision is reached (usually weeks or months), or until the injured party signs a waiver releasing the driver from further liability (often following a cash settlement). Licensed drivers who are familiar with local conditions can be hired through local car rental agencies. In case of an accident, only the driver will be taken into custody."
Has anyone ever had any problems driving around the country? Accidents? Would it be a better idea to try and hire a driver? Anyone know where we can find a driver?
Sorry for all the questions... any tips would be greatly appreciated.
