Four of us will be ending a trip in Managua in July, and have three days to see some sights in that area of the country. We want to get out of Managua into the countryside and will probably be renting a car. Does anyone have any suggestions as to trips around Managua (will not be staying in Managua) of good sights to see or places to visit? We would prefer to get off the beaten path, but because of the short time can not venture too far from Managua as we fly out of there.

Thank you, Mark

Visit San Juan del Sul

Why not visit San Juan del Sul? It is about 144 Km from Managua. See http://www.sanjuandelsur.org.ni. Then go back and do Granada and Masaya. Masaya has two markets, one they call the new market at the fort and the old market where the bus terminal and produce market is. Or you could do Granada/Masaya first then venture on down to SJDS. A couple of things about driving. Do not drive at night and do not cross the solid yellow line even if the vehicle in front of you is at a dead stop and the driver is having a visit with a neighbor. Crossing the yellow line is a money maker for the police. There are some incredible sunsets at SJDS during the raining season. Granada is very beautiful, hot, very historic..500 years old. Try to do Granada on a Friday night if possible. Go to the plaza. You look east and see Lake Nicaragua and you look south and see a beatiful volcano. I hope this helps.

Thumbs up YES,,,

As SanJuanJohn said. Del Sur is a nice place on the beach. Masaya is a good town and very safe to walk around. Madera's Hotel E Mail hmaderas@ibw.com.ni, can be had for $20 USD a night.

In Masaya go to the Market. It is a fun place with lots to see and buy. you are very close to Laguna De Apoyo and the town of Caterina. The best place to have lunch is on the rim maybe $2 0r $3 USD tops - GREAT VIEW !!

If you are there July 19... I think that is a festival day..
