The Mountains of Nicaragua

Spectacular land formations in Nicaragua is not limited only to volcanoes.
The country also has many tall, cool mountains, plateaus, highlands, and
mountain ridges, located mainly in the central region. This mountainious
terrain is frequently separated by soil-rich valleys, planted with a variety
of crops for export and domestic use. Coffee and tobacco plantations, as
well as grazing pastures for a medium sized cattle industry, are located in
the valleys. The rivers and mountains give the region a pleasing
environment. It is an area where through the years geology has capriciously
created important geographical reliefs. These are:

The mountain ridges of DIPILTO and JALAPA are located 2000 meters above sea
level and stretch all along the Honduran border. Their slopes are covered
with aromatic pine forests and the rivers (the COCO river, also known as
SEGOVIA and its tributaries) carry gold nuggets. Swift mountain streams flow
downward, jumping over huge granite boulders.

The ESTELI plateaus are huge land masses with flat peaks located on both
sides of a river valley of the same name. This area has a temperate climate
and is separated by deep canyons, where flowing rivers form small waterfalls
such as LA ESTANZUELA, and where opal, jasper, agate, chalcedony, and other
semiprecious stones are frequuently found along the canyons. In the
community of EL BOSQUE, located near PUEBLO NUEVO, fossils of quaternary
mammals have been discovered, supporting the theory that primitive people
lived here thousands of years ago. Oak, liquidambar, walnut, and other
temperate zone species of trees grow all along the plateaus.

The mountains of JINOTEGA and MATAGALPA form a tight cluster of high peaks,
some reaching elevations of 1500 meters above sea level. Others are covered
with thick rain forests. filled with exotic flowers, butterflies, and birds
covered with beautiful plumage. The mountains produce what to some experts
may be the best coffee beans in all of Tropical America. High above it all
and surrounded by beautiful scenery and excellent climate are the SELVA
NEGRA and SANTA MARIA de OSTUMA mountain hotels.

The CHONTALES mountain range is made up of a series of hills and curious
pyramid shaped peaks which rise above undulating grass-covered foothills
used as pasture for grazing cattle, the region's most important economic
activity. The mountains contain interesting archeological sites such as
AMERRISQUE, the sequenced pyramids of GARROBO GRANDE, and numerous
aboriginal burial sites known locally as the CALPULES. There are also gold
mines around the towns of LA LIBERTAD and SANTO DOMINGO.

The ATLANTIC highlands are low foothills that extend from the mountainous
Central Region to te humid jungles of the Atlantic Coast. They are covered
with forests containing important commercial trees such as mahogany, and
Cedar.
Varied and interesting wildlife flourishes in the forest; the Jaguar, Puma,
wild boar, deer, tapir, monkey, and a diverse group of tropical birds make
it their home.
The mountains may be reached by travelling north on the PANAMERICANA Highway
or on the highway to EL RAMA, back roads are used to transport coffee,
tobacco, corn, beans, rice, potatoes, and livestock for distribution in
domestic markets.

Hi!!!!
I'm really impressed with your knowledge about Nicaragua. Do you acutually know all this or you copy this from a book and put it up for people to think you are extremely smart. What do you do? What is your profession? I am not questioning your knowledge and what you do, I'm just really impressed. I kinda wish I could talk like that about Nicaragua.

Hola Carla:
My profesión?

Quiero leerlo.

Some of my friends call me "ghetto" whenever i tend to show to much pride for my country or anything of a similar manner. I ignore them and call them "nicas arepentidos" :-)Again you speak eautifuly about Nicaragua and i wish i could do the same:-)

Saludos.
