Question

Our family is travelling to costa rica August 15 for 3 weeks, with 9 year old. We would like to cross the border and visit Ometepe from Rivas, but cannot find much information about cabinos, guest houses or hotels. Can anyone give us some info on acommodation?

ps. Would you recommend malarie jabs for this area?

You can find out info from lasuerte.com...It has a program which travels between Nicaragua and Costa Rica...I just don't know all the details.
I think it would be easier just to travel from Rivas to Granada and take the boat from there

What do you mean by Malarie jabs??

Malaria shots? Definitely !
You can take the ferry that runs from the Port of San Jorge (3km from the city of Rivas). It usually runs every hour starting att about 10:00 am up until 6:00 pm.
From the border to Rivas by bus should cost you. about 6.00 nicaraguan córdobas per person.
As far as hotels, well it depends what city in Ometepe you are planning on staying; in the city of MOYOGALPA (the island's largest)
there are:
Hotel Colonial w/ a-c: $20.00 (US)
Tel: 045-94116

Cari Hotel & Marina:
"suite" (Family Room) w/ a-c: $35.00 (US)
Tel: 045-94263
You can make reservations in Managua by calling 222-6331.

Hotel Ometepetl
"suite" w/a-c : $35.00 (US)
Tel: 045-94262

They all accept Credit Cards.
I hope the info will be helpful.

San Juan del Sur is abt. 14 Kms from the Costa Rica - Nicaragua border; You can also go to Granada and take the Hydrofoil to Ometepe (no Hydros from San Jorge).
Should expect rainy Wx.
Some other light info on PICTURES OF NICARAGUA.
If more questions, let us know.
