Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast is a world apart. Not only is it dramatically distinct from Nicaragua’s Hispanic Pacific; it has within itself, various diverse, interesting cultures. All packages include a cultural tour of Bluefields, led by local expert Socorro Woods, which includes visits to Garifuni and Miskito artisans and Creole musical artists. Two fascinating tours with Socorro, both in private motor boat, are offered as optional. One is north to the beautiful tropical paradise of Pearl Lagoon to visit Miskito villages, learn some Miskito words and meet with this major cultural influence of the eastern section of Nicaragua, where over 150,000 Miskitos can be found. This full day excursion also includes a visit to some Garifuni communities to talk with bush medicine men and learn about the cultural rescue projects going on there. The other optional full day boating tour is to the island of Rama Cay in Bluefields Bay, the final outpost of the vanishing indigenous Rama tribe. We’ll meet with these shy, last representatives of a near-extinct culture. At last census the Rama society consisted of 649 people with 24 fluent Rama speakers still remaining. Later we’ll go up the Kukra River to visit a well known Rama midwife. Caribbean Culture is an experience in intriguing, diverse and unique customs of warm, open and friendly cultures.
