Hi Jason, I'm sorry if I did not answer your question on time. The masks that are made in Nicaragua are made from two basic materials; Wood and wire mesh. The first one (wood) it is generally carved from a single piece of wood in some cases however pieces are added to the initial frame (nose, ears). The masks are finished with colorful basic colors.
The other common type is made of mosquito mesh and with a frame around it to as a rim. They are made by pressing either by hand or by repeated hammering until fit a wooden mold with the shape of a person or an animal . The rim is latter added to keep the shape in place. The molded wire is then painted to the desired style and a cloth as lining is uses as a finishing touch. The lining will probably include (cutouts) eyes if the material is thick.
The mask were traditionally use in Indian ceremonies before the Spaniards arrived but after they arrived they were used to make fun of the Spaniards and they European practices.
