Money - USD vs. Cordobas

Hi there folks!

We are scheduled to travel the south pacific side in March. We have been to Costa Rica several times and have used USD a lot but have found it more cost effective to use the national currency. Would it be advisable to use USD or Cordobas while in Nicaragua? Any advice would be appreciated.
