Living Like a Nica experiences

I recently wrote an ebook about Living Like a Nica (see the advertising forum). It was a combination of my 5+ years in Central America and 3+ in Nicaragua. I continue to see people (Gringos) buy in gated communities, borrow to buy land they will probably never use and such. I think there are alternatives.

About 25 years ago I remember someone telling me that clearly Nicaraguans were loosers because the average income was $600/year. That got me thinging: if a Nicaraguan can live on $600/year and I can't even pay my electricity bill on that, they must know something I don't. Well, five years ago, I decided to do some first-hand research.

While I am not poor--or living on $600/year--my wife comes from a poor family and we certainly aren't living the "buy now, pay later" life. I can (and will) talk about my experiences but I am interested to hear from others who have left the rat race and opted for what I call the easier life/slower page of being in Nicaragua. Not Gringolandia, as I like to call the Gringo compounds but actually living among ordinary Nicaraguans.

Living like a Nica

Hi!!

I just wanted to ask you where are you and your family from, are you a gringo?
I am from Nicaragua and 25 years of my life belong to my country (memories).
For sure I cannot call Nicaraguans LOOSERS, just a different type of life after the war. I remember the good years when I was younger and all the fancy life style. So... we were just like any other small fancy Country.
I've been in this country for a while and all I had done is working, working and working... and I love your country, but I will be back to Nicaragua one day soon, after while you get tired of all the bu....we are very friendly people with a big heart and sometime others will take us for granted....
I am from Rivas, and for a gringo this is one of the best town... the beaches are closer and a lot of what we call.... INTERNATIONALS.
I will get back with you later; I have to go back to work. What city are you from?

Just want to toss out a bit more information in response to some questions. First, I am from the U.S. (Los Angeles and then Seattle). Moved to Costa Rica the beginning of 2002 and Nicaragua the beginning of 2004. Still here and still love it. My wife is Nicaraguan.
My new project is to build an eco-tourism facility in the Tisey nature reserve near Estelí. The beginnings of the web site is at Welcome to CoolTop | CoolTop Eco-Resort. It is to be "different" from anything else. While it is in a pretty amazing location in the mountains we hope to attract a new kind of tourist. Besides the usual hotel rooms, restaurant and such, we will offer inexpensive private cabinas for rent by the month. We hope this will be come an option for book authors, computer geeks and anyone else who just wants to get away from "life" for a while.

Nicaragua remains an amazing place. Today, you can "hang out" in Managua with the clubs and such of most major cities, hang out in small places on either of two oceans or go to the mountains. You can get from any of those places to any other in just a few hours. And, if you have virtually no money you can visit (or live permanently) at rock bottom prices.
