Sorry, but Latin is a Language, not used by many anymore, but it was the official language for the Roman Empire. Actually it is used by the scientific community to name viruses, plants, animals their species and their origin. It is also used by the Vatican as an official language for the church, as many priest can write, read and speak in latin.
The origin of Latino is a derivative from Latin ( as descendent of latin origin, which means as origins from Spain, Itali, Portugal, France, etc. Latino is used in many areas of the US as a despective name for all the people from Latin America. But for me, I'm a PROUD LATINO and I do not give a **** as who said it to me, as a slur or as a salute. I know who I am, and from where am coming from. |

Well said! but.....
Actually as Valeria mi sobrida will said, "Latino" comes from the Latin word "Latinus," which originally meant someone from the province of Latium (today "Lazio" in central Italy) and Belgita can testify abut that. Les explico: The city of Rome is in Latium, and someone with the legal standing of a citizen of Rome was considered to be a "Latinus. "The word evolved into "Latin" in English. So yes, today it is accurate to use the word "Latin" for anyone from a country in which the dominant language is derived from Latin. I remember in a world government class I took, we studied a short unit on the history of government in Latin Europe -- a correct usage of the word. Based on this definition of "Latin," Hatians would have to be considered Latin Americans because French is a Latin language. The rest of Latin America (incl. Brazil) is referred to as Ibero-America. All these descriptions reference the colonizer, something with which I have no problem, but some PCs do. In any case, "Latino" is simply the Spanish word for "Latin," so in Spanish, a Frenchman is as "Latino" as a Nicaraguan by definition. So there, te quedo clear loco? Listo pues deja tu aceleramiento and instruct your self! |

It seems to me that Latin is just the english word for Latino. Be proud of what/who you are. Because no one else will be that for you. And i don't mind it when people call me a Latino/a. That to me is better than calling everyone mexican. They know that we are not all mexicans but they do it anyway.
