VALLE LA LAGUNA, Nicaragua (AP) - An earthquake violently shook poor villages east of Nicaragua's capital, killing at least two children and injuring at least 31 people.
The quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9, struck Thursday afternoon and was centered in Laguna de Apoyo, about 30 miles east of the capital of Managua, according to the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies. The earthquake was felt across the country, but deaths and injuries apparently were limited to Valle La Laguna, a village in Granada province about 25 miles east of Managua. Nicaraguan Vice President Enrique Bolanos confirmed that an 11-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy died when the wall of a house fell on them in Valle La Laguna. The Nicaraguan newspaper La Prensa reported an additional death, saying a boy was killed when a rock hit him on the head while he was helping his father repair the roof of their house. The newspaper also said at least 50 people were injured. The report could not immediately be confirmed. Hundreds of houses, mostly unstable cement and adobe structures, were damaged and some were destroyed in Valle La Laguna and other nearby villages. Army helicopters evacuated five of the 31 injured, while firefighters and the Red Cross rescued 26 other people after clearing volcanic rock and trees away from a blocked highway leading into the town. In San Juan de Oriente, a town of about 5,000 people, residents ran into the streets, clutching their belongings and bracing for any aftershocks. ``Never before had I felt an earthquake like this,'' said 90-year-old Elvira Gallegos. The town's church and some houses in San Juan de Oriente suffered minor damage. Some roof tiles fell, and statues were toppled in the cemetery. An aftershock of magnitude-4 shook the town later that afternoon, but there were no reports of serious damage or injuries. AP-NY-07-07-00 0610EDT |
