Have you thought of contacting someone in Esteli, perhaps thru an Internet Cafe, to see if they can look it up? Esteli is a pretty small town, so this should not be so diffucult.

I did a search and found one:
Copi Center
Esteli, NICARAGUA
Casa de Cultura Leonel Rugama, 75 metros al oeste. Esteli, NICARAGUA
PHONE: 505 850 3618
FAX: 505 713 2038
rolando_adolfo@hotmail.com

Remember that her name was likely Dona Juanita de Ruiz, not Juanita Ruiz...

It might be worth e-mailing this or another gentleman, explaining your case, to see if he can look it up for your. Another option might be to contact the phone company for Nicaragua at http://www.enitel.com.ni/. The white pages can be found at http://www.paginasamarillas.com/paga...s=5&es=*&cs=*. Note that the phone number, if she has/had one would likely be on her husband's name, not hers. I did a cursory look on the white pages and nothing came up.

There is another thing that I want to make you aware of. If you grandmother comes from modest means, it is likely that she is not going to have a phone number. Until very recently, phone numbers were for the wealthy, and the poorer people would use public phones. There is no guarantee that this is a good option.

One avenue you might want to explore is to see if you can get details from the census. The last one was held in 1995. The web site of the government agency that runs this is http://www.inec.gob.ni/.

The other might be to contact the phone company for Nicaragua at http://www.enitel.com.ni/.

I wish you the best of luck and pray that God will lead you to your roots. And best of luck in you wedding.

Regards,
Carlos Barberena
Cypress, TX

just.........

Go to Nicaragua, to the city you were born, and find out through the local registry, so no big deal, you have plenty of information and in those towns people know each other, go for it. It’s going to be good for you.
