Nicaragua is a beautiful country with plenty of natural attractions for visitors to explore. Unfortunately a number of its attractions are not that well known. One example of this is the Peñas Blancas Massif, which is a large mountain mass located in the country’s northern departments of Matagalpa and Jinotega.

Hundreds of years ago, long before the Spanish conquerors arrived on the shores Nicaragua and started to exert their influence on the people of the land, the Sutiaba tribe were the indigenous people living in the area now known as Leon. The descendents of this fascinating group of people are still living in Leon today and the legacy of their ancestors can be easily discovered through a trip to the Sutiaba Museum.

It is strange how the names of the larger cities that are located in the Carazo department are more familiar to travelers than the department itself. The capital city, Jinotepe, and cities such as San Marcos and Diriamba are well known destinations in Nicaragua, however, their department remains a mystery and almost invisible to many. Located near to Managua, most of the department is situated at approximately seven hundred meters above sea level and is home to an estimated hundred and seventy thousand residents.

Located around 43 kilometers downstream from San Carlos on the Rio San Juan, Nicaragua, the eco-friendly Montecristo River Lodge offers visitors a superb getaway in naturally beautiful surroundings. The lodge is situated within the Montecristo Private Reserve, an important birding area which is home to the mystic Macua, after which Nicaragua’s national drink is named. The majestic old La Polvora Fortress stands at the end of Calle Real Xalteva in Granada, and serves as a reminder of a time when this lovely part of Nicaragua needed protection from invaders. Of course, surfing is not the only attraction of Playa Colorado, but for the majority of surfers all that matters is the quality and consistency of the swell, and by all accounts it is exceptional.
