The beautiful Tisey-Estanzuela natural reserve is situated approximately 10 kilometers south of the city of Esteli and about 140 kilometers north of Managua in northern Nicaragua. Rated as one of the protected areas of Nicaragua due to its natural beauty and biodiversity, the Tisey-Estanzuela natural reserve is a highly recommended tourist destination. This 9,344-hectare pine-forested reserve is home to over 100 species of flora and fauna.
The scenic Cocibolca lake in Nicaragua, covering approximately 8,200 square kilometers, is the widest lake in Central America and one of the biggest lakes in the world. The lake is often referred to as “Gran Lago Nicaragua” – Nicaragua’s Big Lake. Cocibolca Lake has an interesting archipelago consisting of 365 islands situated about three kilometers off the shore near the city of Granada. It is believed that this archipelago was formed when nearby Volcano Mombacho erupted around 20,000 years ago, hurling rocks, ash and lava into the lake. Some of the islands are inhabited and some are even privately owned. All of the islands have lush vegetation and a wide variety of birds.
Located in Central Nicaragua, amidst the breathtaking mountains and tranquility of the countryside, is Finca Esperanza Verde, meaning Green Hope Farm. The farm is easily reachable from Managua, which is a hundred and sixty kilometers away, and Matagalpa, approximately thirty kilometers from Finca Esperanza Verde. The motivation behind the farm was to create a nature reserve as well as an ecolodge. It is the perfect example and proof that it is possible to run a farm without destroying nature or displacing the animals that live in the area.
The exquisitely beautiful Lake Nicaragua is the largest lake in Central America. This freshwater lake in Nicaragua covers an area of over 8,000 square kilometers and is often referred to by the local people as “the sweet sea”. This name is appropriate because, apart from the lack of salt, this lake is very much like the sea complete with waves, archipelagos of islands and sharks.
Agritourism is fast gaining popularity around the world and many authorities are predicting that it will soon be one of the largest sectors of the tourism industry. People are showing an interest in how their food is produced and this type of vacation allows tourists to visit a farm and get involved in farming related tasks, such as the picking of produce, while gaining an understanding of exactly what is involved in running a farm. Many of the coffee plantations in Nicaragua offer agritourism programs and the response to this has been very positive.
The stunning canyon rock formations that have been declared as the Somoto Canyon National Monument are situated near the town of Somoto in the Madriz Department of Nicaragua. The protected area of the canyon covers approximately 170 hectares and is one of 78 protected areas of Nicaragua managed by the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources.
The small village of Casares in Nicaragua is situated about 70 kilometers south east of Managua on the shores of the Pacific Ocean.
The small town of Ducuale Grande, situated in the northern part of Esteli in the beautiful country of Nicaragua, has a long history in ceramics.
