The Freedom Fighter’s Manual – Battling Communist Rule
The United States of America started to view Nicaragua as a serious threat when, on 19 July 1979, the Nicaraguan dictator, Anastasio Somoza, was overthrown by the Sandinista National Liberation Front. To ensure that Nicaragua would not become a communist government, America began to support the Contras groups and decided to take up the responsibility of assisting the local communities to fight against the government, but without encouraging a revolt. It was with this in mind, that the C.I.A. began to compile the Freedom Fighter’s Manual.
Explore the Peaceful Beauty of Pearl Lagoon
The attractive town of Pearl Lagoon (Laguna de Perlas) situated in the municipality of the same name, is the largest coastal lagoon in Región Autónoma del Atlántico Sur (RAAS), one of two autonomous regions in Nicaragua. North of Bluefields, the capital of RAAS, the inhabitants of Pearl Lagoon form a clean, quiet and safe community. The town has lovely peaceful lanes that can be explored at leisure. People travel between Pearl Lagoon and Bluefield by water taxi, and boats ferry goods back and forth.
Visit the Museum and Natal House of Maria Romero
Near the Xalteva Church in Granada, is the Museum and Natal House of Maria Romero. It stands as a reminder and monument to the humanitarian efforts and care that Sister Maria Romero provided to many. Her work and dedication to others, has been remembered and even led to her contributions and sacrifices being blessed by Pope Jean Paul II in the year 2002. Sister Maria Romero’s house of birth has been converted into museum to celebrate her life and has become one of the more memorable attractions in Nicaragua.
